Vervet Monkeys - Fact vs Fiction

Monkey Bizness has, for the past two years, been publishing widely that monkeys have become addicted to Western-style foods and that there is no lack of food in their natural habitat.

And this has now been confirmed by a leading academic after studies and research she has been conducting on one of the Dolphin Coast's elite gated estates.

This is then one of the primary reasons why they have become a challenge to live alongside in the urban environment. Not only seeking out every opportunity to exploit the smallest gap in your defence (assuming you don't have an open-door policy), they have also become increasingly more aggressive when faced with physical attempts to ward them off.

Women and children in particular are easy targets - adult males are treated with slightly more respect. And how they know that a female (with short hair) wearing slacks and a jacket is not a 'man' is another study worth pursuing in the future!

But returning to how to deal with them responsibly and humanely must first take into account the following facts.

It is challenging to deter/control monkeys in open spaces, as they are as inventive, determined, and wily as a determined thief who wants to break into a building. They can scale great heights; leap even greater distances, and are nimble enough to tightrope walk overhead cables. Will gatecrash monkey deterrent barriers when there is a food source (unbinned waste, open dog pellet bowls, bird seed feeding stations, veg gardens, fruit trees, etc). Crawl beneath or jump over electric fences.

The only effective technology is ultrasonic soundwaves that are set at the correct frequency, but even these are limited in terms of the distances they can cover, and in stiff breezes and high winds, soundwaves are fractured, making them temporarily ineffective.
